This double-sized cover allowed plenty of scope for a huge battle between the X-Men, their allies the Starjammers and the combined might of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and Shi'ar Military, led by Vulcan.
My original idea (see right, above) was to have a brooding image of Vulcan's face overshadowing proceedings, however the editors wanted Vulcan in the midst of the battle, so in the second version (see left, above) Vulcan replaces Starbolt in the heart of the action.
This just illustrates the unpredictable journey from concept to finished piece - and the though process behind the the painting itself. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one reproduces as a wrap-around cover.
