Spider-Man vs Scorpion I- April 1999

This picture's setting is Brown Street, Mineola, Long Island. It's where I stayed with the Kachelhoffer family when I went to DC comics as an intern a few years back. Jack Kirby used to live round the corner from there. It was one of those streets that reminded me of where Kevin lived in The Wonder Years. That's the feeling I wanted to evoke with the setting. I like the 2 kids hiding behind the parked car. I still like this pic even though Dez rightly 'sez that the composition, especially the way the Scorpions tail follows Spider-man a little too closely, doesn't work properly.

This was done at a time when I just used to do a quick drawing of each separate figure, trace the background straight from photo to canvas, and then trace the drawings over the top. It's not recommended, and it explains a lot of the compositional problems I used to have - I used to do the finished painting without having even considered the overall image. I might redo this picture one day.
