JSA Incognito Comics Catalogue Cover - Aug 2000

I kinda like this one, though the execution is a little lacking.

I did this pic before I'd really started to analyse illustrators like Rockwell, Elvgren and Leyendecker more closely, examining how they approached their work and who influenced them. Doing this really gives an understanding and insight into an artist's technique, style and vision that you can't get just by looking at their work.

For example, if you want to understand how Alex Ross paints and draws like he does, don't look at or copy his work, look at Andrew Loomis, Rockwell, and pretty much most of the great American illustrators. Also, what has helped me improve over the last year or so has been studying the pencil or charcoal work of these guys and really practicing this aspect of my work. I can't stress enough how important drawing is to become any good at painting. It's something I put a lot of time into now after neglecting it until about 18 months ago.

I like the Icicle in this picture and I think Johnny Sorrow is a great character. When doing this painting I knew nothing about him as I couldn't get hold of a copy of JSA 10. I just went off the Alan Davis cover for issue 16 or 17.
