Cover to Hawkman #21 - June 2003

The editors really liked this one. I was after a 'fine art' look and originally planned on a version of Jacques-Louis David's 'Hector' painting, adding the harness and wings and having The Headhunter character dragging Hawkman's body away. P.T told me to drop Headhunter from the pic and just have Hawkman in agony, which was a good call.

The logo being part of the trail of blood was something I'd mentioned in my thumbnails and Peter was happy for me to do it. The only comment he made about the finished drawing was to make sure I didn't do Hawkman's green leggings as 'Jim Morrison rubber pants' again...

As a composition I think the final product really works well, though it's certainly not a pleasant image. After it's 'fine art' origins, I think this turned out to be my most contemporary covers so far.

The concept pencils for this image can be seen here.
